I feel like you'd enjoy Rainmeter. It's what I use for my desktop here: https://webmshare.com/play/jMmbL Elements can be added or removed at will. There's some pretty cool minimalist stuff for Rainmeter as well.

One downside to Rainmeter though is that you don't have to have SUPER intense code knowledge to make it work, but sometimes it helps to have.
