How would you feel about an SGM brand Minecraft server?

I'm with Quit, I played Minecraft from 1.3 beta to...1.8 beta maybe a little later very consistently, it was fun adding twists like Factions and things like this. However now, after hundreds, maybe thousands of hours spent on the game Vanilla Minecraft is not entertaining and I think this would go for a majority of the community personally. The game can be interesting for a short amount of time with building and with some mods trying to work up to this goal or that. But without some major changes it gets old fast.

We had a community run FTB server for a while run by "He who shall not be named"Horizon, we had a pretty good playerbase at the time for the size it was. We had 7 or 8 regulars and a total of around 14 people who came in and played when they could. I would be willing to join in for something like FTB, I still find it enjoyable. However plugins and large mod packs can be interesting and the Server box itself has to be able to handle more so there are some downsides.

I should also probably clarify the big difference between Minecraft compared to both TTT and Deathrun.

Those games, you can pick up, play any number of rounds, and be done to completion with it.

When I say time investment, I mean that Minecraft has such a high amount of "Mandatory Grinding" Almost. I mean, you always have to go through about 3 hours worth of mining to find your first diamonds. Then, you have to keep going beyond that to get full diamond gear.

Next, when you consider factions, you need things like teams and organized attacks. And you need to keep returning to the server to check on the status of bases. For a lot of us, we like to just jump on TTT without caring really who's on, or maybe with one or two friends. A lot of us don't want to organize huge raids and the like.

This is what I mean by time investment. TTT is easy to pick up and play a few rounds. Deathrun, while not my cup of tea, is the same. Minecraft requires too much planning, grinding, and returning to the server.

I like this idea, having personally co-owned a minecraft server, can say they are very successful regardless. Modded will bring in more enjoyment for me and many others, but vanilla will also bring in a different type of player base.

Why limit ourself to either when we can have both? Plugins allow you to create seperate worlds inside a server that could cater to both of these problems.

That does make sense, however, I'd consider this more a problem with claiming land than anything else. I always personally think that the buildings could be left just as vanilla as could be myself. But that's just my opinion. I don't like land claiming anyway, so I might be biased.

Lets say that we manage to have seperate worlds(one vanilla one FTB for example), would the box be paid for or a home box? If we were going to pay for a box, who would pay for it and upkeep it etc since this is community run instead of by Highwon.

I'll be replying to other posts too, but let me clear this up cause it'll be quick & easy.

This IS hosted by Highwon; it's just like our other servers, but a different game-mode and I'd come on as the primary Minecraft developer.

It'd be a dedicated box hosted in a professional datacenter (and the specs are good, but not for me to share).

There would be a plugin that shows a rank title beside their name E.X: [VIP] Smashslice and either their name or tag could be colored the rank. Ranks would obv be different and have to be added.

Players on FTB would more than likely all have access to a mod that enables hats, yes HATS! They're quirky and fun and you get to collect them by killing animals wearing these hats, however I believe you can give players hats using config files(don't quote me, this may have changed or been removed as it was in a much older version of the mod.)

There aren't many perks that can be given out in MC anymore due to the guidelines about fair and equal gameplay given by Mojang.

Minecraft is a dying game. I think it would be a loss of money.

I personally think FTB could work. But I don't want a shit ton of banned mods. Like some things in mods get banned just because the devs are too lazy to edit the mod.

Well, i barely read anything anyone said here because it's late and im lazy. Personally, (if i could buy the game rn) I would totally play minecraft if this were to happen. However, I'm not sure that would hold up well with the actually bearable players of the community, i.e. not squeakers. It's been a bit since I've actually played, and in regards to whoever said it's a worn out game for this age group, I think it's been long enough that people would be not burned out to the point of actually just visiting.

Plus, there's not really any other gmod gamemodes/games in general right now that are server-based and actually good, or at least not worn out. If Highwon was looking to expand, I feel like this might be the best game to do it with. (not sure if other games were suggested above i didn't read lol)

I didn't read a single thing in here, but Minecraft with friends is a completely different game than it solo. I would be down.

Completely agree with this. Personally I love @irritatingness' original proposal regarding a factions server as I have a lot of experience Moderating it and know a lot about it to where I feel like I could help cater to that playerbase more, and after having a mini conversation with him in shoutbox about it I'm very excited because of this idea. However, I completely understand people who have a lot more fun with the game with stuff like FTB, I think something like this would be our best course of action.

Needless to say, I'd be down.

I'm glad to see that there is such a good amount of discussion here. I'm interested and eager to see where this leads.

*Edit: Would this be owned by Highwon and lead through the leads and a staff team like deathrun and TTT are, or is it more of a development like the past servers that were brought up on page 1?

Thanks @Highwon for creating that alert to gain some attention here.

I just want everyone in this thread to know I'll be out all day tomorrow (work + school) and that I'll be replying to everything on Thursday. Any and all feedback is welcome, and I appreciate any questions or concerns you might have. This thread will be the best way to ensure that if we proceed with this plan we address the community's opinions on it. If you have something you'd rather ask in private feel free to PM me as well, sometimes a question can feel stupid to ask, but I don't mind.

LOVE this idea. This has some serious potential, when I hosted the Minecraft servers they were pretty popular to those that knew about it and wanted to play. So long as you can keep the content fresh and supply everyone with new things to do every now and then that would really help this out. There are a few good Minecraft players in this community that can get the base game done in about 3 to 4 days. I'd really like to this work out!

The real question is the longevity of these possible minecraft servers. How long would they stay relevant before fading into obscurity? Will they be popular for a month and then die off?

I've sat here and contemplated this since I saw the thread yesterday and though I think the concept of opening up to other games is great and I am somewhat for it, I would be a little scared to expand at just this moment when we have things like updates for both our TTT and Deathrun servers being so scarce. When we moved to Deathrun it was all well and good but these days you will see it dead for most part of the day. Do we want to put funds and time into something like this that runs the risk of being quite a flop when we already are struggling to keep one of our things alive right now? Do we want to expand right now when previously it has been started a couple of times and has played out the same way? I think the discussion of this idea if great but don't believe that any of this should be implemented in the near future until we stabalise and ensure that the two game modes we have now are getting enough attention from the Dev's side of things. I know you have offered yourself to do this in the OP (correct me if I am wrong) but I'm still iffy on the idea.

I mean it would be dank don't get me wrong, playing with friends is a great part of this and would make it worth while coming back, but what about rule sets? Punishment? Who would be in charge of dealing with that? I am more than sure we don't want trolls coming onto and ruining everything so we would need to consider that too. Also to consider would be a possible rank system that would bring in cash flow to support the server because it aint gonna do that itself without that being an option. If we consider all of this that has to go into just the bringing about the idea, is it worth it in the long run if it takes a similar path to that of DR? What happens if it dies completely? Would the loss be worth it? I know people may seem hyped now, but what about when it gets boring? What about when you get too busy to dedicate time to the dev side of things and all of that dies down?

Just some things I had while I was at work. I would say more but I'm still at work and my brain is dead. Please forgive. :woot:
