lately I've felt like there are some changes that should be made in the staff team. My tenure as a pmod was pretty short, but there were definitely some areas that could have been improved
Mediocrity can easily be hereditary to the staff team. If an admin is not suitable for the job, they can be more inclined to pick up poor trials, and the cycle then continues as those trials become mods, and then those mods will teach the next pick up of trials.
It's important to realize that this is not always the case. A good admin can take a risk and still not succeed if the applicant is just awful, and an awful admin can still pick up a good applicant if the applicant doesn't need a hands-on admin during the trial process
but the issue arises when a poor admin picks up a candidate who is simply "adequate" or "acceptable" and who really needs that extra push to be a great staff member. Speaking from many years of experience with applications in general, the majority of apps are just those two adjectives.
I remember a trial who rushed through their trial phase because the admin wanted to promote them. A couple weeks later, they ended up demoted. That mod /could/ have been a good addition to the staff team, but a poor trial phase resulted in them ultimately being forced to leave the staff team.
Another easy example would be a player who was reported numerous times right after being promoted to moderator. There were never any public consequences except valid reports, but it did show clearly that the mod in question should never have passed the trial phase.
Both those people didn't do anything wrong. Even if you have an inkling that you aren't ready for a promotion, it's hard to say no when the opportunity comes your way. The issue is with the admins who ultimately make that decision to promote a premature applicant.
This is only one general example, but this is why it is so vital that admins are not merely tolerable or so-so; rather, administrators should be constantly striving to improve and being the best they can be. Mediocre admins will produce more bad moderators than a good admin will. These bad moderators will go on to effect the day-to-day life of the average playerbase.
It's already been awhile since I was a pmod. Not being affiliated with the staff team anymore is the main thing that prevents me from making any sort of official "letter to the staff team" post on the forums, as it's entirely possible I don't have the full story. Or maybe something is already in the works.
in other news I had a mod ghost to me today by reporting unreported damage less than a minute after it happened. They didn't remove the roles so I was able to see the role of who I damaged. I was annoyed at getting reported so quickly, but when I realized I got ghosted it became 100 times more hilarious
Monthly Update: feels like it's impossible to get an admin demoted unless they're a pedo, damn. Good news is new stuff is around the corner with the PT server, looking forward to a distraction from bitching about mistakes in the staff team :^)
We back up in this bitch. Staff pushes for quality over quantity, but when a lot of quality mods are resigning, you are going to end up with less quality and less quantity.
From my perspective, and this could easily be wrong because I jump to conclusion, very few people are actually being demoted or forced to resign. This raises questions on how certain issues are going to be resolved.
You can't indiscriminately trim the fat and say "Yes, this is helping with the goal of quality over quantity." when you have staff naturally resigning. I suppose if all the trash staff resigned, then it would help, but that's not really happening.
You have things like an admin who has a long history of failure, and when that failure is finally addressed, no "action" happens. Instead, you have someone trying to fix the issues by hand-holding that admin instead of a justified punishment. When you take a softer approach to situations like that, it conflicts with the goal of protecting quality.
The whole idea of a quality baptism is laughable if the upper staff refuse to do something that could hurt someone's feelings. I know that's not why they aren't handling out demotions, but that's what it appears to be. It doesn't help that inactivity and other traditional staff requirements are just ignored atm. That'll change soon :^)
It's a little earlier for me to be trash talking this attempt to improve SGM's staff team, so I'll wait to see how it plays out before continuing on the subject.
Turns out if you directly lie ( yes or no question ) about your relationship with another staff member, you get promoted to lead. Throw on an extra +1s for trying to dismiss it as a rumor.
