I created this map: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=282402056 and wanted to play on it to get a good feel for the game-play and mechanics so I can imporve on it, it has a functional destroyable T-Tester and functional lights. It's built for large servers, would be a good map for your server.
If I was to sum up my critique in a phrase, I would say your map lacks substance. A lot of the areas in it seem to be just open space with maybe a few props here and there. Clutter is good, it adds element to the map (cover, things to jump on as vantage points, visual appeal etc.) and it just makes an overall better map. That's not to say you should just jam things in and cramp the map, but TTT maps shouldn't be too open. There needs to be ways for traitors to get away with kills, and the most common, most simple method is by using cover. My advice would be to break down the larger areas of the map into smaller components, and make some of them functional rooms (traitor trap rooms? stairways leading to above-ground vantage points? Or maybe a detective room) and the rest filler rooms (bedroom, bathroom, hallways are some common examples)
Yea, I had the 'fillers' planned when in development but I got tired of dealing with the Hammer editor so I released it early. I wanted to play the map on a server with a decent number of players to see if it had potential and to get ideas that would help me get the motivation to polish the map.
Unfortunately that's not really how map development works. A map only gets put on the server if it already has the standards of quality set by Highwon and the lead admins. If they put up unfinished maps to help boost 'motivation' in the mapmaker to finish the project, the community's reputation would suffer. As a mapper you don't have the luxury of being able to test how it will play with 30+ people on at the same time. So you have to learn how current maps are played, why they're good or bad, and shape your maps around those principles. TL;DR you should finish the map before you suggest it.
I understand that, but it's a pain to setup hammer and spend time on a map I am not sure if people like the direction. It's fully playable albeit alittle empty, I just thought the community would have fun beta testing a map and giving ideas.
Yeah sorry Vypr, it will look great once done i'm sure. I hope you finish it then put it under map suggestions. @TheCoCoFTW or @FrostedBlade can move this forum into the proper place for more feedback. Goodluck on your map!
Not to discourage you but this looks like what I've first made when I tried making maps. Just keep on trying. If you keep on trying you'll do so much better, trust me. Also -1
