Hello all, I have been playing quite a lot on the STTT servers recently and the servers are great; however, one thing in particular really bugs me. When an admin moves himself to or from spectator mode, it says "... has forced Themself to spectate." The grammar nazi in me really wants this to say "himself" since the player is singular and themself is not a word, it is really "themselves" which is plural implying more than one person is moving. Thank you for listening to my rant.
I did not personally implement this message but it was likely done that way due to the fact that "themself" is gender neutral as our staff includes both males and females.
ULX made it so it puts Themself in the place of where the name of the person force spectated should be, !fspec command is meant to be used to force spectate an afk, but Moderators and Admins like to use !fspec ^ (usually binded) to make it easier to move to spectator mode to deal with reports, or just to spectate. Normally the command would say "The Law has forced Detective Doge to spectator mode." (!fspec "Detective Doge") (Executed by @The Law) When staff members use commands on themselves, it says Themself instead of Himself or Herself so it can be gender neutral.
Oxford English hasn't accepted this usage of the gender-neutral pronoun, but Strunk & White has. Since sTTT isn't formal writing, it's perfectly acceptable. To be a true Grammar Nazi, you must not only understand the rules, but when they should be applied, and where it is permissible for them to be broken. Until then, you're just a Grammar Völkisch Nationalist.
