About
that other Cat
once upon a time there was a little girl
who spent so much time hiding herself away
from the bitter cold, the dark, and the rain
that she did not see; her shelters are what failed
the cold only kissed her nose and cheeks
the dark always helped her to fall asleep
the rain never fell with more than a peep
she spent so much time hiding herself away
in shacks with no good candles or blankets
and in fields with thorns and no flowers to play
she claimed she feared being sick from the cold
yet she fell victim to a loose, creaky floorboard
she always closed her eyes when she faced the dark
but she suffered a bad burn from an old lantern
she feared the rain would drench her clothes
but the wardrobes always bore cloth hungry moths
if only the little girl realized she sought shelter
in things that would always hurt her worse than
a brisk wind, a moonless night or a thunderstorm
the little girl let herself down over and over
by trying to find a castle in rotting planks and mold
she would learn, in time, that a house is not a home
a lantern cannot warm someone's heart or soul
flowers will never grow without some rain
and for the love of a good, clean sweater
a wardrobe is no place to look for imaginary friendsInteract
