What Do You Look For When Playing A Survival Game? What Makes You Think Oh Hey, This Survival Game Is Good!
Survival games are great if they have sandbox elements as well. I love being able to progress through different tiers, building my way up to success.
Something that will always make a great survival game great, is it’s combat, just how necessary it is to build a shelter, and how hard it is to find much needed resources (food and water). Games like The Forest nailed 2 of the 3 boxes for me. The need for a shelter at night was apparent on night 1, and grew in necessity each night as the monsters evolved and became more aggressive. It was incredibly difficult to find food and water which meant there was always the threat of starving to death or of dehydration. Are you going for a survival horror kind of game? Are you going for like-Minecraft sort of survival game? What’s your goal here?
There is also the need for replayability. The forest failed at this because there was a really confusing main story line but if you managed to beat it there really wasn’t anything else to do except survive. You would need to think of active goals that a player would be able to spend a long time completing.
Imagine Seven Days To Die, But Better Looking And A Lot More Bells Whistles And Optimizations ETC And A Story To It And Possibly Much Much More (With It's Own Unique Twist Of Course)
Something I'm Aiming For Especially Is Base Building, Looting, And GUNS Now, With Guns To Use Their Real Names, For Example, The Ump45 You Legally Need To Recieve Permission From The Guns Creators, In This Case, Hekler And Kotch, Or They Could Sue Me, So I'm Looking Into Getting Permission To Use Just Their Gun's Names In The Game
For me its something I can start playing for 45 mins in the morning, look at the clock and then realize I missed everything I had planned for the day. I actually really love games with resource micromanagement weirdly enough. State of Decay 2 and Fallout 4 are some of my favorites. Fallout 4 I just spend days building huge elaborate settlements.
It is so hard to find the perfect game honestly. I love survival games, especially if they have some form of scary aspect, but I also love the sandbox idea where you can build stuff and expand. Games like ark and minecraft are definitely up my ally. I love the freedom in them, I can do whatever I want really. I like to think I'm very creative, so if the game has some form of creative outlet I'll probably be hooked. I especially like multiplayer games. Whether its working together or just having other people around, it always makes the game more fun when you enjoy it with someone else. Another HUGEEE thing I'm into is character customization. I love having my own character that I can make into my own. Having a base character and then add-ons or outfits you can change is alright, like in Dead By Daylight, but I love the idea of completely changing it to be my very own. Again, with minecraft and ark, they give you that creative outlet there. Another thing I enjoy in survival games is fighting. Dead by daylight you don't really fight, especially if you are the survivor. With Ark and Minecraft though, you can create armor and weapons and fight things to survive. As well as increasing the level of armor and weapons, a good survival game allows you to increase your own levels and skills as you play. Whats the point in playing if you can't go anywhere? It'll get boring if theres no reward system and ladder to climb. Finally, this isn't as important but is always nice to have in a game, good artwork and an aesthetic environment. Not much to do with the game itself, but it is very important to have a game that is visually pleasing. This doesn't mean HD quality graphics and perfectly designed world. I just dislike games that don't have anything pretty to look at. Like with minecraft, they have such a beautiful art style, and you can even download shaders and texture packs to make it fit your liking more. Minecraft with the right texture packs and the right shaders is honestly so damn beautiful. It makes me want to keep playing forever and ever. With Ark, they have really colorful dinosaurs and pretty views, its pretty realistic in its artwork though so its just like walking through the woods and you see dinos. I don't care if its pixelated or extremely smooth, I want it to draw me into the world. Basically, some key things I enjoy in a good survival game are: something that can scare you or put you on the edge of your seat while playing sandbox-like for creative outlet freedom to do what you want, not really a story line but there can be multiplayer character customization for personalization fighting advancement nice artwork/world design also I used minecraft and ark as examples because they are in my top 10 games that I truly enjoy.
