Was this purposeful? Im sure there was a solution by going back to the server states before the crashes started to occur and start from there. why didnt we do this to save our home?
This has been long in the making by a lot of different factors, no it wasn't purposeful but eventually gmod communities just run their course, along with helping factors that speed up those processes.
to go off this..... is there anything we can suggest or do in attempt to save it, that would improve our player count? Like reverting, Dev team separate from staffing, reboot of staff team from ex staff like in previous years? Are suggestions open for possible fixes to get to a state of normalcy once again. .
The crashes were definitely a problem, but to say they caused this entirely is stupid. Many different factors contributed to this mess and i'll try to list as many as I can: 1. A substantial loss in regulars (following 1/11 and the april reboot) as well as other pieces of drama that divided and forced people out. 2. Lower populations (on account of the crashing) 3. Lack of viable applicants meant staff could not be replaced 4. Lack of regular content updates All and all, a total stagnation killed this place. Staff team wasn't growing, servers weren't growing, content was expanding... it was simply a complete halt of everything until eventually it couldn't sustain enough momentum to continue onward.
From what I understand the crashes were caused by an issue with the game itself, nothing that SGM added, and getting a fix like that is not easy / possible. The only way this could have been possibly prevented would have been to get 1-2 full time devs, with full server access, which then just exposes the community to potential theft of highwon / opal / veris code and used on other communities that do not care about gameplay.
I understand your point of code stealing but what I don’t understand is how this is a game issue, if it is how come other servers aren’t having the same issues? I call bs on that
If anyone was willing to, with the eventual server shut down( which is still a year out) I’d totally be willing to get a discord server for people that still have interest in chilling with the ex sgm players.
Yes that would be perfect if this is really happening so we could atleast stay in touch maybe play someother games together
It could still be a game issue. Just because not every server is having it doesn't mean that other servers aren't suffering issues, or have found a way to migitate them.
According to the current plan, discord and forums are not being shut down with the game servers. So don't worry yall, you can stay connected with everyone else. Also: Seeing as there's quite an amount of posts now and this took the form of a discussion rather than a Q&A, I moved the thread to 'General Discussion'. New posts won't need to be approved anymore now. Happy discussing.
Sadly I am not versed in how GMod works. I also haven't witnessed other servers crash as frequently as SGM's East 2 and West 2 did, but I have seen crashes. Be it related or not, I would not even have the slightest clue, but I do doubt it was just updates alone to SGM TTT that caused them. They might be a possible factor, though, but not the sole cause. The ultimate problem, though, is it's not so simple to just roll back to see. SGM is a rather large project, with dozens of custom guns, models, sounds, scripts and more, and all of that is part of the code. In addition, depending on how they store their code to work upon it, it may actually be impossible to roll back. And as a final thing...I do not believe it was simply the crashes that led to the downfall of a great place like this. Opal has spoken about wanting to do his own projects, and I suspect he had planned to depart for some time now. I have a feeling that Highwon, while knowledgable about GMod, may not have the skills or time to develop and maintain a project like this. As someone that has dabbled in larger scale things before, tackling them alone is a great challenge.
All it needed was some time to figure out the crashes and it was never done, it was held up on lies about the various things done to keep people happy, and the person who spun that web of lies, did very little to fix them. Highwon has the skills to run the server, he has done it for years on his own, but for a while now has had no time nor passion to do it. I don't blame him, I would have dropped this place a long time ago after the various events that have happened here, but he did it for the people who still loved this place. And to that I have an insane amount of respect for him, it was never a place to gain some extra cash, it was a place that he kept running to give all of us a place to hang out, to make friendships, to have fun from the everyday shit of life.
I think perhaps it started as a passion project, but many of us don't even want to play Gmod anymore, let alone devote an insane amount of time to simply keep servers running and functional. Add to that testing new content, refinining and optimizing old content, and you can quickly see how someone would cease to give a shit. Then like Roz said, all of the chaotic shit that has gone on is just not worth the headache to try and catch up to other communities anymore. Truly I think what this place needed was more coders or developers to completely remove the workload from 1 person, diversify the burden. But who knows. In the end, Gmod is dying anyways. Maybe the people keeping the server running just want to move on to more fruitful endeavors in their lives. More power to them, just sucks for those who are still playing I guess.
Honestly if anything is the cause of this it's the fact that gmod itself is a lot less popular than it used to be. The game is over 10 years old, and most games don't even come close to having players after that long as new games get released. How can SGMOD get new players if gmod can't?
Gmod gets new players. The problem is, you have a rando come on and then it crashes 5 minutes after playing, and they are like "lmao fuck that" I have never seen a community with servers that crash like this. None of em even crashed in the first place, really. But anyhoo, the community has gotten a bit.. How should I put this.. Toxic? In a couple ways. I think SGM is just too far down to save, Opal left, Helix left, and now it shall slowly die out as more and more people slowly leave. Look at (forbidden word, we all know what goes here) you go into the server and see inventories and a shop that has it's own different UI, and so on, it actually looks inviting. I wouldn't see why the discord wouldn't stay open considering it's free though.
