This is true. I wrote this almost three years ago:

I haven't been here the entire time since then so I can't say if it's gotten better or worse over the years, but ever since I came back most recently (late last year) it's been more glaringly obvious than ever. It's a rare treat to play on a staffed SGM server. We're encouraged not to report single RDMs, it's a chore for most players to record mic spam or harassment in voice chat, et cetera. The process of reporting something like mass RDM is easy enough but it's not something that should have to be done every time you play the game. It makes the game a lot less fun when you're more concerned with who is going to RDM you next than actually playing it. Anyone coming on the servers for a decent experience is going to be turned away by the lawlessness. It's pushing me away as it is, I'm considering looking at other options after spending over 1750 hours on SGM. A nice UI and some good weapons are great on top of a well-moderated server, and that's a lot of the reason I joined, but without some basic rules being in place and being enforced it's not fun.

I do understand the obligations that staff have. I have a real life and most of us on here do. As an easy comparison, let's take the fact that I moderate the /r/music subreddit. I'm the most active moderator by number of actions and I take a role in the decision-making going on behind the scenes. This is a volunteer moderation position that I've chosen to take, much like the mods here. I don't let it get in the way of my personal life, or my professional life, but I wouldn't have taken it if I didn't know I could do it and do it well. If I saw my performance slipping or my interests changing then I would give the spot up to someone who was willing to put in the extra effort to maintain a well-run community. It should be much the same here.

I also understand that it's not exactly the easiest thing to just let more applications through and add mods as they leave, but something needs to change there. There's about fifteen open mod and admin positions, plus eight trial mods that for a majority of their time as such have no power. I know that even a full staff team can't be expected to cover all servers 24/7, but maybe taking a chance on more applications every now and then isn't the worst idea. Maybe look at the reports section and see who is consistently helpful while not getting banned or reported too much, see if they're interested in a trial. Anything is worth a shot at this point and the worst that can happen is you get to disqualify users that aren't cut out for the position and move on. If it's too much time and effort, maybe we need different staff members that are willing to put that time and effort in.

If the servers were moderated as well as they should be, or even just better than they are now, it would be easy to be grateful. Right now there's rarely a good experience to be grateful for on SGM servers. I don't doubt there are dedicated staff members and I don't mean to diminish their efforts, I appreciate them, but said efforts aren't exactly translating into consistently good results.

 

Really? I've seen a server with 10 mods, 6 admins, 2 lead admins and the owner.

 

I don't know if you're serious or not, because I don't know you and this seems like it would make people moderate more.

I think it's backwards, though. For me, at least. The only reason I quit being a moderator is because I didn't want to meet the hour requirements. Right now I'm playing, though. I could be helping the server but I can't because of an arbitrary hour requirement.

Now, I understand that because we have limited spots for moderators, we need to weed out the less active mods, and because we weed out the less active mods, we have fewer mods. Is there a reason for why we have limited spots for moderators, though? Does that reason outweigh the disadvantages of the whole thing?

I can see why you would want mods to be active. Like, two hours a day of moderation (which is a relatively big part of your life dedicated to one server in one game mode of one videogame). I think it's because people stop trusting someone with mod powers who hasn't been actively moderating for a while. A mod that's not active will seem distant to the server and may not care about it anymore, which leads to potential abuse.

You know who else can abuse their powers, though? Someone who is active and just decides to quit. Any mod or admin right now could, on a whim, decide to abuse their powers right now and then quit. So I don't see why the hour requirement is even needed that much.

Discuss, though. I'd like to be proven wrong and/or see everyone's thoughts on how useful an hour requirement is, and how high it should be.

We probably have limited mod spots because there's limited admin spots and there's only so many people that one person can keep track of. Maybe with more admins, there could be more mods, a lower hour requirement, and possibly more moderation.

 

Maybe they should make a rank of Trusted or something for people who the staff feel are responsible and active enough in the servers to take part in monitoring the server when they're not there. The "Trusted" rank could do voteslays, votekicks, temp votegags (Like max 1 round), or temp (max 60 mins) votebans. This would at the very least, help with mass rdmers or people who are just griefing in general. Of course I say they should give this rank out to people who are trusted by the staff to be responsible and active enough to use it, so as not to create any "chaos" or any negative reactions due to the fact the players wouldn't be on enough to make use of the rank.

i see a common argument. staff doesn't get paid. i used to be staff on a darkRP server. i didn't get paid. i loved it. you got benefits in the server. i put in 100 hours as staff in a half month. if this is not already a thing, perhaps give mods donator privileges. higher chance to be T, get points faster, be able to buy VIP class items in pointshop. also, that is the joys of VOLUNTEER WORK. you don't get paid. you still work... if you don't like staffing, don't be staff. people who do like being staff will be absolutely fine not getting paid.


again, volunteer work is free work. if you like staffing, cool. be staff. if you don't, why are you staff? if you don't like playing TTT, don't fucking staff for it!

 

I feel like if being a moderator had this many perks, people would just become moderator to get these perks and not because they actually enjoy going through reports.

yeah i do want the server to have staff that plays the game... and apparently im the stupid one. heres my suggestion to staff. if there is already staff on that server, join a different server. and play more. one thing i noticed. the people who dissagree are staff everytime. you guys realize us normal players dont like being rdmed, so im suggesting, FIX THE PROBLEM. more staff, or, get rid of staff that dont play. VOLUNTEER WORK IS FREE. IF YOU DONT LIKE IT, DONT BE STAFF.

what exactly where you critiquing? all i saw was you saying "heh, i dont like your suggestions so im going to make fun of them". thats not criticism. what im saying is do something to make it better for the player base in terms of rules. rules are never inforced on servers with less then 20 people because staff rarely play on them. either make staff leave, or give them some incentive.
