Just wanted to ask a question that might spark a discussion. First, religion may not be brought into this because of obvious reasons. Second I am not making this thread because someone is having suicidal thoughts I'm making it because I want to see the types of people in this community.

Well, life is hard, but things usually get better. I know, because I have been there and made it through. It is heart breaking some of the stories you hear on the news and such. I feel for anyone who has gone through something like that, and I hope things get better for them.

As an agnostic, suicide is wrong because of the psychological effect it has on people around you. Once you ask everyone "Hey, I want to kill myself because I hate life right now" and they give you the go ahead it's okay. But lets face it - that'll never happen.

In short, if there's a chance it'll have a lasting negative effect, don't do it.

Suicide is one of the most selfish things a person can do and it causes self blame/harm on the living.
I despise the people who decide to intentionally end their life rather than pity.

People who commit suicide are selfish or wishing to end the pain. Either way they don't consider all too well how it will effect other people. Being agnostic and all doesn't really affect how i consider suicide. If i had to put suicide in one way it is very rarely if ever good in a larger sense than bad. Merely because every action we do has a ratio of good and bad effects. We can never measure it really but hitler did commit suicide. And that caused a war to end sooner. Otherwise i see in the news *This random person commited suicide please help their families* this selfish prick who decided it was better to spite everyone in their family and all their friends just to end the pain. I don't mean entirely to sound so rough but that's just how it is.

Better question - what is your take on forced suicide? If that's the right terminology. Like a spy who was caught, they would generally commit suicide to avoid both torture and the possibility of leaking information. What if you got stranded in space (cue Gravity) and decided to vent your air out instead of wait for it to run out?

There are many situations where suicide isn't wrong, but the recoverable situations are the selfish and wrong ones.

Suicide = no bueno, NO BUENO

Take it from someone who has to take anti-depressants to not think about it in the first place.

It's a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Life always gets better. Just look for the meaning and it helps carry on.

Yeah... suicide is honestly a selfish decision, people love and care for you & you're going to leave on them like that.
    That's horrible.
A suicide happened in my family and I never went a day not thinking about my bro. Whether it was my fault or if it was my family or what.
    Worst. feeling. ever.

I hate suicide. My uncle commited it, and my grandma was really depressed as my whole family. It made me sad forever and I miss him everyday.
When people do that they don't realize they will hurt people around them more than themselves.

I would personally wait for time to run out. The way an oxygen supply runs our is the same as any other pressurized container; like the air in a tire, it slowly trickles off. Venting it all at once would be a quick change and would feel more like suffocating than the slow drifting off to sleep that would happen if you used it until it ran out.

Well, if you vented more out so you got to that slow transition to death faster you could end it sooner.

I support having options. I support suicide as one of those options.

Excuse me if I sound like a bad guy for a second, but allow me to explain my case. I've gone through years of depression. I've had friends, family, and strangers all around me go through depression. Yes, it does get better, but not quick enough. Those who rave that it's "selfish" to commit suicide are hypocrites. Why would it be selfish to finally do something for once that makes you happy? An option that will end the merciless pain that chokes you by the second? There is nothing like being alone with your own mind in your worst possible mental state. If there's a loving god and an afterlife, suicide is the smart way to enjoy heaven quicker. If there's no god, suicide is the only solution that will stop you from being hurt again. There can be nothing wrong with death if it's just nonexistence. It truly is selfish for a living person to claim a self-murderer's decision caused them pain. Trying to compare the pain of a self-murderer and a family member of that person is stupid. Do you know what is temporary? The fact that life is temporary. Choosing to end it earlier because there's just far too little the world can do for you is not selfish.

I don't condone suicide if it can be prevented, but if my closest friend came up to me and I tried everything to convince him that life is beautiful and worth it, but he still decides that it's his time to go, then I wouldn't exactly feel as sad as I would if he didn't give me the chance to show him how much the world can offer him. Yes, I understand not reporting someone's suicide claim makes you an accomplice, but it's not exactly difficult to plead you had no idea they were that depressed and make up conversations you had with them (considering they're dead now).

I'm sorry for the aggressively sad tone, but I truly feel this way.

Side-note, kittens are worth living for.

  15. There are 2 sides to this. Gonna keep it short

Removing yourself from the lifes of people who love you is selfish, yes. It causes years on years of pain and grief.

On the contrary however, isn't forcing someone to stay alive who just isn't happy with life to the point that he/she would rather not live it for the sake of your own happiness just as selfish?

There are some people in my life who I truly don't know what I would do without, I don't know how I would continue, but if they can't possibly feel happy staying here, who am I to tie them down in a place which tortures them.

To end, I would never be able to commit suicide firstly due to the fact that I cannot find the power in me to cause so much pain in mainly my mother. I'm 90% sure she would follow me if I did. Secondly I'm absolutely terrified of death, the possibility and likelyhood of nonexistance is sometimes so overwhelming I can't sleep at night. However just as much the possibility of staying, in some kind of soul state living on in the world without the ability to make any contact with your live loved ones is just as scary to me. Though the fact that there has been no recorded, as far as I know, proved encounters with dead friends to this date the likelyhood of nonexistance grows. What color do you see when you have nothing to see with. What do you think when you have nothing to think with. Who are you when there is nothing for you to be..?

This became more about death, and it wasnt even short. Oh well.

If you're thinking about committing suicide. Ask yourself if there is anything else worth dying for.

I'm just not a fan of it because people treat life like it's such a commodity. There are people that have to fight to live in this world and most people who commit suicide are lucky enough to not have to worry about it.

I've had friends and loves ones commit suicide, as well as responded to suicide attempts, both successful and unsuccessful. It's not a pretty thing that most people see as a last resort. I have talked to people who have tried to kill themselves and have thought that it was their last resort, even though they had only tried a few other options.

I think that any more the majority of people live in such a piss poor sensitive society where you grow up learning that "Everyone's a winner" and everyone deserves true love. We get medals and trophies for participating; giving children the idea that they should always get something; making then feel as if they don't deserve to learn the hard way.

I know I'm not much older than most of you, but some of you I have more than ten years of life experience. With my career field, I have gotten the chance to see just how precious life is. I've had to tell parents that there's nothing more we can do for a child and children that there's nothing more we can do for their parent. It may be easier for me to see the value of life, but so many people find the ease in focusing on what us bad and completely ignore good and ways for help. Sure, use it as a last resort, but not until you have tried other things.

Random Suicide Fact: Greenland has the highest rate of suicide; over double the amount of the place with the second largest amount of suicides.

To me, it honestly depends on the reason. Many people at my age are stupid highschoolers who don't know the difference between being depressed and having their feelings hurt. For example, a person I know (a 15 year old girl) is "depressed" because the people she called her best frienes said they couldn't trust her. That is something that would hurt somebody's feelings, not make them depressed. She is now mentally unstable because some people who she thought were her friends said they couldn't trust her. Some people also treat her like crap at school, but there's people for everybody that treat them like crap, and normal people don't get depressed over it. This is seriously her entire situation, nothing more. I find it ridiculous that some people don't know the difference.
In response to what @POPSTAR said previously about people who say it is selfish are hypocrites, it isn't entirely true. My best friend dated a girl for not even 9 months, and she broke up with him. He attempted suicide (the rope broke luckily) because of it. That is selfish. He could have just waited the sadness out instead of bringing sadness to the ones around him. It wouldn't have caused him happiness. He waited out the months of the depression over it, and now him and her are friends.
So you see, it can be selfish sometimes. There were other ways out to the situation. I could go on and on about this topic because I know truely depressed people who are suicidal, and I can see many ways out that would bring them more happiness than suicide, and I talk about these with them to try to show them that there are less selfish ways than such, and they are beginning to see reason in it.

    Suicide....

    I could say a lot of things about this subject... It seriously depends on who you are;

It's easy to feel absolutely alone in the world you live in, and it's also easy for someone to claim that someone who commits suicide is selfish. They don't understand the inexplicable pain/pit people with depression feel. When your chest get's heavy with "darkness and despair" while you over-think everything about your life and jump to conclusions; replaying scenarios in your head over and over thinking of a world that you do not exist in, and whether the people around you will be better off. One thing I have learned is that MOST of the time, the real people who feel depressed are the ones that are silent about it. I didn't even see it coming with the people I know of who committed suicide.

No, I personally have not felt those feelings (at least not strong enough to the point that I would want to end my life) but I've unfortunately lost more than one person to something like this, and it makes me sick. I've seen people be just fine with "happy pills". Pills that increase the activity in your brain of chemicals like dopamine and serotonin. While that may work for some people, it can also make other people emotionless and miserable individuals. I guess what all that semi-useless information is leading to is that it depends on the person.

I guess I agree with @POPSTAR and @Zikeji when they say that there are situations where you simply can't really blame a person if there is absolutely no way out. I think I'm gonna end it here before I write a whole novel about the topic.

To summarize my whole opinion, suicide is not a topic where there can only be one side that is right or wrong. While a lot of people can use the idea of suicide to get attention, it is also something that should be taken seriously. Some people can be deemed as selfish to commit suicide to fix a temporary problem in their life (Middle school, high school), while others are at a mental state where they literally cannot be helped. Like I said many times, it depends on the person.
