?

Should we implement a rule that makes it more fair for the accidental Goomba stomper?

  1. So I was playing on Dolls and I was getting off of the top of the big door, when I fell because the ladders totally suck. I of course had to land on a noob inno who didn't understand that it was an accident and wanted me slain. I'm proposing that this kind of situation be more like a word vs word, because it isn't my fault I landed on him, and I know you can purposefully Goomba, but in general I think more people get slain for this who don't deserve a slay.

Accidentally killing someone is still RDM. However, Goomba stomp victims are usually given the option if they want their RDMer slain or not. In this case the victim wanted you slain, there isn't much you can do, mistakes happen.

  4. But its not even a mistake, its not my fault at all. They should have slayed the ladder, not me!
Also the victim didn't even know you could Goomba people, because he isn't a regular, and doesn't know much about the game, he thought I had shot him.

Ladders aren't that difficult to deal with; you just have to know how to climb them.

But still, a little bump on the left or right move button flings you off source ladders, I suggest we fix the ladders :p

Well, you have to understand that most maps use these C:confused:S ladders due to how easy they are to implement. (They're literally a single brush entity in-front of a ladder prop.) You also have to understand that just 'fixing' these ladders would be very hard, if not impossible, as this ladder code goes all the way back from Source to GoldSource (the heavily modified Quake engine used for Half-Life 1/etc), and from there all the way back to Quake.

With that said, Half-Life ladders are fantastic; and only require a little more of a set-up. Rather than just sticking you to the invisible brush with physics (i.e: C:confused:S ladders), it's a scripted event (made up purely of entities) that brings you up/down based on your inputs, and even lets you carefully jump off. Mappers can take this even further, by placing little squares around the ladder for where the player should hop off at.

With that said, as much as I love all of you; I'm not going through every single one of our maps and changing out all of the ladders. Too much custom content, and too shitty of optimization in most of them for it to take hours upon hours to compile. I will be going back and editing quite a few of our maps however, so those will definitely receive this easy face-lift.

Please read the above spoiler if you want a bit of knowledge and learnings. As far as this suggestion goes, I disagree. Not only because it adds more to the rules that a considerable amount of players (veteran and new) can't follow on their own, but also because people could manipulate this. Even an unintelligent troll can take a glance at this, and see the raw potential. Gumba-stomp and kill anyone, and get away with it just by blaming ladders in the report? Sounds good to him!

  8. fix the ones on clue pls

Clue is one of the maps that we're looking at modifying, so this will most likely happen; eventually.

How would we tell if you were on a ladder or no, it becomes one more situation that is word vs word.

I would like to propose a map specific rule for the Clue map since the ladders are not great at all. This would be to help transition until the map is fixed. I feel that goomba stomping happens on this map more accidentally that it would be considered an anomally.

So what, you goomba stomp me and are slain and then post on the forum calling me a noob and ask for the it to be okay to take a round away from a play as long as it's by accident by goomba stomping?

I actually didn't say any of that. I would prefer not to have an internet argument. Sufficiently enough, I had an issue with the rule and instead of bickering and complaining, I searched the forums. Went and made my opinion heard and leave it be. The fact that you take this as a personal insult is a little unruly.

Well the fact that a round was taken away from me by another innocent, the innocent was slain, making everything fair and the offending party had something wrong with fairness, upsets me. This thread should just be locked or something. This isn't worth making a big deal over. You killed me by accident, were slain. End of story. Nobody should be calling anyone a "noob" anyways.

I'm just trying to say accidental RDM is still RDM and you can't really do much without it becoming word vs word. If you accidentally RDM someone, take the slay and and deal with it. Yes, ladders are annoying and they're being fixed, but there's not much we can do other than that.

Instead of trying to lock a thread you could also take my side since during that round you were damaged by falling off the ladder immediately prior to me falling. Which is what my first post was trying to bring attention to. It's the map. You're still taking it personally when you could be assisting in the situation. The ladders are not the best on Clue. I think many would agree on that.

I acknowledge the ladders are bad on the source engine, maps only add to the problem. But I was trying to get onto the ladder you were on and ended up falling, taking damage. After that, I had you land directly on top of me, killing me.

Let me clarify something. There are two ladder systems available in Garry's Mod.

C:confused:S Ladders: You walk up to it to start climbing. They let you freely move around the ladder space, and often end-up flinging or dropping you depending on how skilled you are with using them. It's a single simple entity which takes four seconds to create within a map, and therefore the most popular in Garry's Mod.

Episodic (HL2-EP2) Ladders: Players press E to engage. The player is smoothly centered on the middle of the ladder, and key-presses determine rather the player goes up and down. Once reaching either the top or bottom, the player will be automatically and safely dismounted if set-up correctly. Otherwise, the player can safely dismount via the E key by their own means. Has several multi-part entities involved, unlike any other entity in the engine. It takes less than a minute to fully set-up, if you fully understand how to use it; which most don't. Hardly any Garry's Mod mappers use this unreasonably safer, more stable, and more realistic ladder.

As I continue fixing each individual map on our to-do list, I will begin transferring these to the better ladder system as shown above. With that said, you're more than free to post your individual opinions about this topic within this thread. However if these pointless and (to an extent) childish arguments continue, this thread will need to be locked. Thank you.

And just a little tip to those who like using the CS:confused: ladders, the ones that you can move freely upon, you can use W and D or W and A to increase your climbing speed on them, effectively climbing up ladders at an increased speed than normal.

In the above video, he does it to climb up the ladder swiftly and rather easily. I actually find it does help in regular gameplay of many of the source games I tend to play, unless it's a fixed ladder you can press E to grab onto. Hope this helps a little :D
