You lose me here. Your best example you gave was when people need to throw it into a reportable scenario context. The other example that you gave still has no better solution than just substituting out the actual word for the n-word or really any other slur for that matter. If anyone has half a brain which I suspect a certain someone (not you) may not have people can understand censored words when they're used and also understand that when some idiot is just saying a word because they've been given the gold pass by Highwon they're not saying it at all with good intentions like ever. If there's some quizzical child minds who come across this ever so prestigious server wanting to discuss the perplexities, diction, and history of said words there's nothing stopping anyone from censoring themselves however there's a lot of green lights to take their dumb shit discussion off the rails into the nearest crowd.

The only discussion I can see these words being used in with good reason are threads like this. What other situations could the words be used with good reason? Why is SGM an appropriate place to even have a philosophical discussion on slurs in the first place?

I don't think this change would be significantly different from a no slurs rule so why not go all the way in? This would only allow slurs on servers where the mod doesn't care about it, and then essentially ban it on servers where the mods do give a shit.

The only way I could agree to it being at the mods discretion is if players, even those who it is not directed at, can complain they are offended and immediately get it shut down even if the mod thinks it is okay.

 

I'd like to point out that most moderators would enforce the slurs rule very strictly. I see that you got my point though, there are very few instances where it would be okay. That means that it is mostly not okay, and you would still have the old rules. I'm just trying to find a solution here that doesn't involve instant action for just saying the word, as that is what was at issue with the previous rule, as far as the big man was concerned.

 

I think this is the best solution taking Highwon's firm position on the matter into account. It's not perfect but it's significantly better than where we are now and is as close to what we really want as possible.

 

Yeah I like Paci's approach. I personally never (well, except for that one ban appeal I had because I'm a dumbass) enforced contextual use of racial slurs during my tenure, despite the fact it was technically against the rules. It just never made sense to me, and would have been stupid to do so... So I didn't.

I also never really cared when a couple friends would call each faggot jokingly. Like, it didn't hurt anyone, but I still had to warn them and stuff.

I'm really OK with the rule the way it is on paper - but if people are really just spamming nigger and shit still, long after this rule change, then a compromise might have to made.

And y'all better quit throwing shade at Paci, he has like 0 say over what Highwon does.

I would like to clarify my suggestion:

I love free speech, but I still see the limitations that are needed for it. Even irl in most cases, yelling nigger in a public space could be deemed as "disturbing the peace," if not get your brains bashed in. It could land you in severe trouble in the real world, legally or otherwise.
I don't understand what there is to gain from this change. Being a "proponent of free speech" is not an excuse.
"Oh they only said it once, what's the harm?" Why the fuck are they saying it at all? Why do they need to be able to say it? Even if they don't know the rules, it's common sense.
Nobody gains anything positive from this.
