The Great Christmas Unbanning

Seasons greetings, everyone.

I come to you today to propose a majestic idea; one born of goodwill and kindness and based upon the great teachings that everybody deserves forgiveness and everybody deserves a second chance.

I propose that, for Christmas 2017, anybody with a non-permanent ban is unbanned and pardoned for their past offenses. Additionally, permanent bans could be reviewed leading to the unbanning of individuals with permanent bans for reasons not considered too extreme (for example permanent bans for reasons that break the law such as posting illicit and illegal imagery or hacking/doxing).

Christmas is a time for friendship and forgiveness, and as we all join together in celebration it should be taken as an opportunity to extend the graceful helping hand of absolution upon those who regret their misdoings.

I hope you may all consider and ponder over this grand idea - for the good of the community and for the good of your inner selves. May we all find love for one another and warmth within our hearts in these trying times.

Simple put, No. People are banned because they broke the rules and made the server less fun. The time of year doesn't make that go away. Do you really want a bunch of people who couldn't follow the rules properly coming back on Christmas day?

Yes, there are people who we would like to see unbanned for Christmas, but that doesn't make up for letting in a bunch of hackers, RDMrs, and toxic players, all at once


And that doesn't get into the perma-unbanning, which, for the most part, is entirely deserved. There are reasons to unban some of those perma's, mainly being a single person's opinion of them are the sole reason they are banned now, but the vast majority have harmed or attempted to harm the server or its members.

Your appeal was denied. This last ditch effort to get unbanned is really just not a good idea for exactly what @TomCat™ said above

 

If 1 year bans didn't get extended to perma then maybe you would have had a christmas miracle as well but oof

 

This isn't about me, present. Some things are bigger than me. Some things are bigger than all of us. This is an attempt to get everyone to come together for the good of the community and for the good of all.

 

What is good about not only unbanning, but then pardoning these bans? SGM is a server where I would be shocked if even 1% of the bans were in no way justified, and 10% of bans were a stretch to justify. All you would do is release a bunch of people who broke the rules, and then let them stay longer as they perform more offenses

 

Regardless of the justification of the bans, everybody deserves a second chance and a chance to repent for the sins of their past. By providing them with this opportunity they can move forward and improve themselves as well as the community. An act of forgiveness and mercy is often taken as an opportunity to self-reflect and realise where one went wrong. An act of punishment, however, often leads merely to vindictiveness and hatred.

Do people deserve second chances?
Sure.

Furthermore, people have various ways of achieving this whether it be through ban appeals, steam and forum messaging (to discuss about the ban), forum report, or even waiting out their ban and learn from their mistakes that led to this ban.

But once people keep racking up bans over and over, it shows that they aren't willing to learn from their mistakes or from their past.

To simply put, I don't think this will be ever implemented at all.

Going with what @Yuuki said a little, people get second, third, fourth, fifth, sometimes six+ chances. And those chances are renewed over extended periods of time. Giving someone a free pass on a crime isn't giving them a second chance, it's just foolish. You serve our your punishment, and then your second chance begins.

 

I see some excellent points in this thread, so I'll amend my idea - what if we change it from unbanning everyone to just unbanning specific people, like Spud?

 

What would the criteria be for unbanning specific people? If they asked, if they didn't do much, or if they only did certain things? Would it be a temporary unbanning so they could play the christmas event?

 

This peaceful thread was turned into something it shouldn't have been. I think this would be a nice idea but to specifically choose people to unban would take a bit long. Maybe if the mod/admin who issued the ban could decide for themselves, and are allowed certain discretion? I like this idea.

 

That's something that would need to be worked out. I'm just an ideas guy, like Steve Jobs. The idea that they could play the Christmas event is a nice one if anything - I'm sure many people would relish the chance to play for a day or two just to catch up with the community.

 

Interesting idea but it just simply wouldn't work out well. Bans are a consequence for being negligent about the rules. Personally I feel that it's really hard to get banned if you have some common sense but everyone is different, some will get banned and they will hopefully learn from their mistakes by waiting their ban out. If they expect to get unbanned every so often then they wouldn't really learn from their mistakes and would continue to repeat their reckless nature.

 

Or you can realize the absolute absurdity behind this and how there's no chance in hell Highwon would ever allow this, and even if it was allowed would it ever work in the first place and even if it worked in initial execution did how flooded the servers would be with hackers spammers RDMers and toxic players.

This is such unguided blind optimism it's unbelievable you supported this and took the bait Spud blatantly splayed out onto the table for someone as cheerful and lawful as your self to get drawn by.

 

Pretty sure he only means a day, and again, he doesn't mean unban the hackers and x5 offense rdmers, he means unban people to have happened to been banned for a week or mic spam ect. Please check yourself and read the post before blindy making a comment.
