I'm sorry that this is happening, but this is the internet. This thread I doubt will do anything, people say what they want whenever they want to. If you feel like you're being harassed staff will deal with it, but other than that people aren't going to stop saying this type of stuff.
It's just a word the internet has latched on to. You aren't going to stop people from using the word, no matter the context, by saying "It offends me because *insert reasons*", no matter how polite you ask. Best thing you can do for yourself is grin and bear it.
A police officer condemning free speech? But we're not Treating each other as equals isn't the same as treating each other with a certain level of respect and humanity
That is pretty much everything I was going to say, you took the words right out of my mouth. Chas is absolutely right, and I respect her opinion on this. Just don't insult people with something like that, it's best if you don't insult people all together, but I know it's gonna happen, so limit the use of insults like "autistic" "gay" "faggot" "retard", and I feel as if it's borderline making fun of people who ARE actually retarded, or autistic, and you shouldn't make fun of them. Thank you, that is all I have to say.
if a nigga acting autistic im gonna say theyre autistic its the internet if someone says youre autistic on the fucking internet youre probably saying some wack shit
Pretty sure most of it isn't victim blaming but rather telling the "victim" to not become a victim. It's just words said by someone you barely know. Spoiler: In short.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Yes I may eat my words slightly but I don't do it just to be mean. But there can be some people that are extremely annoying and won't stop with whatever they're doing. But it still is offensive regardless.
****[TRIGGER WARNING]**** South Park has already explained this with the F-word. Just replace it for the A word. Edit: Sorry for the garbage quality. ****[TRIGGER WARNING]****
I figured I should give a more liberal safe-space response to this, just in case of someone getting insulted by the bluntness or the use of a satirical cartoon. 1.The vast majority of people who use this word casually use it in the same way that people used previous buzzwords. They're not looking at a person and saying "I believe this person is diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, which makes him an inferior person.". They are thinking that the person is behaving in a stupid or socially inept way. There can be many meanings for a single word. 2. You are not going to change anybody's mind about using the word, for two reasons. A. First of all, most people use it without really thinking about it, it's an automatic response to certain kinds of actions they see. Reading one forum post is not going to have a long lasting effect on a well-learned autonomous behavior. B. The people who are using it to intentionally insult or get a reaction out of people will only be encouraged if they're asked to stop. This is essentially the Streisand Effect in action. 3. We have a system in place for if you feel like you are being harassed at any point. Any staff member on the server will handle it immediately, and a forum report will achieve the same results (unfortunately, in a less immediate time frame). I'd like to end this by saying, in a perfect world nobody would experience anything that upset them, but this is not a perfect world. Far from it. I have personally used the word multiple times, probably even on the SGM servers. I do my best to refrain from using it, but even when I do there are zero malicious intentions. I volunteer at a facility that helps children with Autism, Fragile X and other mental disorders. I have seen how heavily impaired the lives of children with an autism spectrum disorder are. I have seen how disruptive it is to their families and how hard their parents work to give them a good life. I understand the ramifications of the disorder, and why it is no laughing matter. I'm sorry you feel insulted, but you can't go through life taking things like this both personally and at face value. I understand it isn't as nice of an answer as "Okay we're all going to stop using it now!". Most people say these things without malicious intent, and there's always going to be a vocal minority of people who say it to put those with autism down. It's by no means your fault, but you still have to do your best to take precautions against it. I appreciate your sentiment, and I agree it is unnecessary to use the word. I am just letting you know you're going to need to take a much more realistic short-term approach while also spreading awareness and asking people to show kindness. Edit: Just fixed some typos.
I'm astonished that this thread took the path that it has. Rating someone simply asking for people to be a little nicer on the internet dumb 8 times? That's honestly shameful. I've read the majority of this thread, and frankly the responses are generally saying for him to get over it. I mean, yes, the internet is a bad place, and it's negative and it's mean sometimes, but honestly, responding with jokes like: "This thread is retarded." and various other things is simply unacceptable, and if you really cared about not being mean or rude to other people, you wouldn't do it. I don't care what you do wherever you may be, but if someone is kindly asking for people to try to be respectful about using these words, and then you proceed to make fun of them for it, it's unacceptable here in our community. Our community doesn't have to be like the rest of the internet. We don't have to just allow stuff like this to happen in shoutbox, on the servers, or on the forums, and we definitely don't if someone is offended by what's happening. If someone is asking politely for people to stop what they're doing, and then they simply increase what they're doing, that's honestly a horrible thing to do. I fully accept and agree with most of the arguments that have been included in this thread, but the general reaction that this thread is receiving is shameful and honestly disgusting. If you disagree, that's fine, but the truth is that on our servers, if you dont stop using words like that after they ask you to, and you increase what you're doing, you're harassing someone, and that's against the rules. You are free to disagree with that, but that's just how it is, regardless of if you're joking or not.
Exactly. I'm just trying to get my point across to you guys because I don't appreciate how offensive some of you are being towards autistic people and people with other disabilities. For the people that rate this and any of my other threads dumb or stupid, you really need to get a new mindset and grow up and get a life. This is absolutely ridiculous and I hate how people just don't even care. It hurts my feelings just to see all the hate and criticism I get, including this thread which is a very good example of this.
That said, Falcbro, don't wear your heart on your sleeve. Refreshing as your sincerity is, it'll just get you hurt because other people don't care. They don't necessarily have anything against you, they simply don't care. It's just jokes for them. A good rule of thumb for the internet is not to dwell on something for longer than it took to write. If someone copy-pasted something, have a glance and move on, if someone made a long, well-versed argument, consider mulling it over in your head. If someone makes a bad/poor taste joke, just move on. I'm not saying you have to stop caring and become apathetic towards others, but getting upset over what someone, who doesn't know you and doesn't care about you, said.. It's not going to be worth it. You're getting upset and the person who upset you is long gone watching some shitty dank anime meme compilation on youtube, ya feel me? It takes a random person less than a second to rate you dumb, don't spend minutes, hours, or days, being upset over it. Same with jokes, as mentioned before. Telling someone who doesn't care about you to stop doing something that upsets you has a very high chance of failing if not backfiring. Some people are considerate and will respect it, but others won't. And you can't stop them. That's how things are and always will be, for better and for worse. So just cheer up and try to move on. If they don't care about you, don't waste your time on being upset because of them.
So it's okay for you to insult people? You only undermine your own arguments when you stoop to insults, my man. Also, I understand you don't like the hate, neither do I. But you don't want criticism? You can't make a post criticizing others for their language then expect to not get criticized. That's what a public forum is for. Edit: It baffles me that anybody disagrees with critical thought and challenging people's stances.
