Screenshoting Hackers (For Staff)

So I was a staff member for about a year on another server and we had a smart tool to catch hackers that can maybe be implemented into this server. By no means am I a coder so who knows.

We basically had this screenshot tool that could only be used by staff members. The premise of it was to basically screenshot the clients' screen and see what they're seeing. The screenshot would then be sent to a certain URL where you would log into steam and if your steamID was whitelisted by I assumed the Owner; then you would be able to access a gallery of client side screenshots where you can view them and underneath the picture would be the player name and the steamID of the player as well.

I'm only suggesting this to help better the server and you may take it or leave it as you see fit.

I can see this working well for non -aim related hacks +1

 

These were suggested in the past when they were a bit more primative and would sometimes screenshot a players steam overlay, so they have been declined due to privacy concerns, but there are newer more polished versions that do not capture steam overlay, I could see this maybe working.

 

Implement it. Caught many a hacker in my days with that tool. Screengrab I believe it's called.

Admins should be allowed to have it.

 

That's too many people with access to potentially private information, which could be abused.

 

TBH we haven't exactly had the best track record lately.

 

Like Panzer already said, leads have access to it. I recently spoke with a lead about this, and they said that they only have access to it through highwon, so I dont really know if my suggestion would be implemented.


I understand, with how things in the past have gone, why we don't give admins access to thing Like this, but now we are down to one lead admin, who can't be on all servers at once.


One way I can see this be "fixed", is if admins had access to ss the players client, but only leads + specially picked admins would be have access to the ss database. That way, the ss would still be there, and players would still be banned for it, regardless of how long it takes. I honestly don't know if there is a way to implement the ss going to a secure site, but if it's possible, then awesome. @Chai @Verified @irritatingness @Deathbyrussian

 

This is possible, you can save the pictures, so admins or mods could trigger pictures and then they would be accessible by leads on the website perhaps, I could help code something like this. @Highwon @Opalium

I've used it before and I've caught many hackers. From wall hacks to even hacks that can make you see exactly how much health a person has behind a wall and even hacks that help you see dead chat, admin chat, and who the traitors are. If this were implemented I feel like it would substantially help the server and the playing experience for all members.

 

If the Steam overlay issue was fixed, I'd love to see the staff team begin to start using this feature.

 

Yea its a real shame, I did a ton of research on the subject and there is simply no way to detect steam overlay or any other overlay, leading to possible privacy concerns, but it would be a very helpful administration tool, especially if darkrp is added.

 

Actually there is, using pixel detection you could possibly run each image through a code before being uploaded to a site (ie: adminstats or something). If it catches the steam overlay then it will remove the image, this could be abused but they would have to be pretty dedicated.

Also having a safety net where if a player presses shift + tab in-game, for the next 2 minutes you can't screenshot them.

Well how it works is it screenshots your screen, then will take a base image (steam logo: ) and search through the entire screenshot looking for that exact pixel configuration, since it's a logo it won't change on different resolutions (or shouldn't at least).

 

@My Dime Is Up has this very thing. He has the option of screenshotting clients vs overlay. I'm sure the code can be rearranged to keep the overlay from being selected. Ofc it all depends on if he is willing to let us use the code.

 

As for the shift tab wait thing, I can see this being easily abused by cheaters. Just shift tab obce every little bit and you will be a okay.

What I was thinking, what if, if there is the overlay open, and the image scan thing see a that, it will take another pic every 5 seconds until it can catch a non covered picture, while at the same time deleting the others? I understand that it could overload the thing, but there won't be any space wasted, cause the bad pics would be deleted. Not even sure it's possible to code this lmao
