Something to think about...

First of all, let me state some things.

1] This is going to be quite a long post filled with information and opinions. You can choose to skip to the bottom for a quick summary.
2] Information provided is intended to be as unbiased as possible. I cannot guarantee the neutrality of the websites though.


So this is something that has been plaguing my mind for quite a while after reading about it. I'm talking about a problem that has been plaguing the gaming community for a while and seeing as how this is a community dedicated to gaming, I would like to see your views on this particular matter.

Anita Sarkeesian runs a show that shows female sexualization in gaming. Her aim is to promote feminism in gaming, however she has received a large amount of backlash from the gaming community. She was given the opportunity to give a speech on said topic at Utah State University. Of course, she received death threats.

''Several staff members at the university received an anonymous terror threat from someone claiming to be a student. The email said that “the deadliest school shooting in American history” would occur if the event was not canceled, according to the Standard-Examiner. ''

This is not the only person to have received such backlash though.

This person is Brianna Wu. She developed a game known as Revolution 60 and has been promoting feminism in games. However, she has received graphic sexual threats and death threats to her family as well.
She had to relocate as the people sending her death threats found her home address and said that they would kill her and her children.

Here's something interesting.
''In 2012, "Forty-seven percent of all game players were women. Women over the age of 18 represented a significantly greater portion of the game-playing population (30 percent) than boys age 17 or younger (18 percent).''

QUICK SUMMARY:
Feminist gamers are getting death threats, sexual threats and had to relocate for just promoting feminism in gaming. I'd like to know your views on this matter. YES ITS A QUICK SUMMARY FOR A REASON.



What I would like to know was, what are your views on this matter?

If there is female sexualization, would there be male sexualization in video games then?
If so, why is society so focused on female sexualization than on male sexualization?

Will equality ever work?

I dunno man, women don't like dick pics and boys don't either. But women are fine with boobs and asses, and men love them. It's just the way the world works man. So I don't think male sexualization is not gonna happen (at least in the near future).

 

The problem is anita sarkeesian is putting GamerGate under fire for all these death threats. It is in fact the minority of trolls. Not to mention i particularly dont like her going *feminist* when she tries to remove rights from women.

 

I think it's all way to exaggerated. But then again I get the feeling almost everything is these days. There's always a minority of people who scream for something.
I believe there always were people who thought differently, but seeing we can be alot more open in the current society these people tend to use it to broadcast their extremist views and force it upon others, it has evolved from an opinion to the belief they have the 'right' to change it.

In my opinion, just lay back and chill. Yeah, there's more cleavage than manboobs in games, but that's only because 1. Girls aren't attracted to simple nudity as man are, and 2. the ratio of gamers is still 90% guys 10% girls.
It's a game, don't get so upset about it

You can find numbers all over the internet of studies, they don't say alot.
Just go on the server and see how many players are female/male.
Also, what is defined as game-playing population? Girls often play webbrowser based games or mobile games

 

Perhaps I should clarify, what I mean when I say gaming is just gaming in general, be it mobile gaming, browser gaming, console gaming, it all counts. A server population doesn't accurately show the male/female population because this isn't the only server/game out there.

 

I hate to say it but I didn't think of it to be a huge issue before she came along. It's like the people who look at advertising and scream "That's racist!"

I doubt there are companies that go out of their ways to offend a section of their potential buyers. With that being said, I think her views are kind of far. I think its just a way to grab attention to herself than an actual issue at heart

 

So you see that this woman is getting death and rape threats for her and her children, and you think she's trying to get attention? This isn't middle school kiddo

 

People just get way too serious about silly things. They stop believing in that it's just an opinion and think its their right to change it. Others always tend to follow the person who screams the loudest if they can relate even a little with the cause (sheep). And thus a 'revolution' starts.

Just sip your tea, eat a cookie and move on. That's my advice lol

 

Here let me step out for a bit. I think if you're going to stick your neck out on a controversial topic like this, then you're going to have people that disagree with you pretty bad. Not that it is good in any way.

No I don't but I think the field she is pursuing is prone to this type of behavior.

I'm not hating on her all the way. I just don't like her for other reasons.

1. I think there's male sexualization in video games but there's very small amount of it, so people like a majority of us who aren't interested in dicks or abs probably won't look for games with male sexualization. Or we just overlook it.(probably not)

2. Maybe game developers wants to use sexualized females to appeal to the larger market which are male.

 

I don't like Anita is because she rides on the death threats, anyone with a braincell will know they won't happen.
She (or as it seems) is using them to force her view on gaming upon others which I sorta despise.

But either way, I do agree with her stance on games. A lot of games seem to favor white old men instead of coloured young woman. As if the gaming community can't relate to others that are slightly different colour and body biology.
It's ridiculous.
